DUDE....TUNE THAT THANG!!!!

Tuning Tips

An electronic tuner is a useful tool whether you are a novice guitarist or a pro... invest in an electronic guitar tuner. We have great tuners starting at $18.50.

Tablature Example

Play the string open while making sure the other strings are silent. Let the string ring so the tuner can lock on to it... then look for your target pitch. Most tuners have a meter or light to tell when you are sharp or flat. If your string is flat you would tighten the string a little with the tuning peg and recheck the pitch. If it is sharp you would loosen the tension on the string and recheck the pitch.

When tuning strings with an open harmonic note hold finger lightly against string directly above the 12th fret and remove immediately after plucking string. You should a clear bell like tone. Most useful for ensuring an accurate steady note for comparing/tuning, this also allows you to turn the tuning machine while the note is sounding. Natural harmonics can usually be found at frets with position markers.

When tuning a stringed instrument, always 'tune up' with the string under tension to ensure it stays in tune and does not slip due to latent friction e.g. at the nut, tuning peg, string guide.
